Community Church's Military Pastor Written by Joel E. Mast Life inside
the Washington beltway is much different than life around Indian Lake. Yet the
two worlds fill unique needs in John B. Ellington Jr.’s life. As the Rev. John
B. Ellington Jr., he is spiritual leader to around 350 people who attend the Indian
Lake Community Church in Russells Point. But as Chaplain Major Gen. John B. Ellington
Jr. of the National Guard, he is responsible for the 2,200 chaplains and chaplain
assistants serving 450,000 National Guard members across the nation and overseas.
“I love pastoring,” Gen. Ellington said, “but I love the military. “The church
is wonderful to give me the chance to serve.” He recently received his second
star and the promotion as head chaplain for the Guard. The job requires he spend
time in Washington and overseas. Around Thanksgiving, he will travel to Afghanistan
to visit troops there and touch base with the chaplains in the field. “I’m the
chaplain to chaplains,” he said. “I have to take care of those who deploy with
the troops. “I’m at a level where I do a lot of administration. Washington, D.C.,
is a great bureaucracy and we’ve mastered bureaucracy. “So coming back to Logan
County centers you because you’re dealing with real life and real people. I would
add the quality of life is much better.” Thirty years ago, Gen. Ellington was
a young pastor serving the Indian Lake Community Church and continuing his studies
in the Dayton area. He answered a want ad for a part-time chaplain with the Ohio
Air National Guard’s 178th Fighter Wing at Springfield. From March 1979 to July
1990, he remained there before a transfer to the state chaplain’s post at OANG’s
headquarters at Rickenbacker Air National Guard Base, Columbus. In March 1994
he was promoted to the National Guard bureau in Arlington, Va., where he has continued
to serve and advance up the ranks. He has reached the highest rank he can hope
for, so he will most likely retire from the Guard when this three-year assignment
ends. In the meantime, he relishes the opportunities the post gives him. Beyond
the administration and shepherding the other chaplains, he is the primary moral
and ethical adviser to the head of the Guard. In that role, Gen. Ellington tries
to emulate the Old Testament prophet Nathan who used tact and parables to convince
King David of his errors in leadership. Chaplains, who are non-combatants, have
the highest level of confidentiality in the military, the reverend said. This
assures soldiers they can freely tell of problems they are facing, and that in
turn, gives the chaplains a unique insight into the spirit of the warrior soldiers.
