    News Release
    From the ODNR

    June 21, 2006

MORE THAN 9,300,000 SAUGEYE AND WALLEYE FINGERLINGS RELEASED INTO OHIO WATERWAYS TO ENHANCE ANGLER SUCCESS IN THE FUTURE

COLUMBUS, OH - A recently completed stocking of more than 9,300,000 fish in state waterways by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife will provide anglers with many great fishing opportunities in future years.

Fifty-four reservoirs around Ohio each received a share of 7,500,000 fingerling saugeye; more than 1,800,000 fingerling walleye were stocked into an additional 15 lakes. Fish were stocked from mid-May through the first week of June.

“Thanks to the good weather we had this spring, we were able to exceed our production goal for saugeyes,” said Jim Stafford, administrator for Ohio’s fish hatchery program.

The saugeye fingerlings (pictured here) are a hybrid cross between a female walleye and a male sauger. Incapable of natural reproduction, they must be stocked annually to provide fishing opportunities. Saugeye fishing is a year-round pursuit and is productive in many lakes, as well as in the tailwaters below dams. Saugeye were stocked in a number of popular fishing spots, including Alum Creek Reservoir, Hoover Reservoir, Deer Creek Lake, Buckeye Lake, and Indian Lake in central Ohio. Grand Lake St Mary’s in northwest Ohio, C J Brown Reservoir at Buck Creek State Park in southwest Ohio, and Berlin Reservoir in northeast Ohio were some of the more popular locations stocked with walleyes.

Adult saugeye and walleye can be caught with both artificial and live bait. Jigs tipped with minnows or night crawlers and night crawler harnesses probably account for most of the inland saugeye and walleye caught by anglers. Another popular and effective method is to troll shad-imitating crankbaits, especially during the mid and late summer months.

Cost per pound for fish fillets
A couple yrs ago, I averaged out how much per saugeye. Of course, gas prices were half back then. Somewhere in the neighborhood of $2 per saugeye. It cost me around $15 for 5 hrs of saugeye trolling, truck gas and we averaged 7-8 keepers per trip. Half that $15 was for lost baits, LOL!
    Saugmon

$15 dollars a pound? Get real. Don't forget to add in the cost for the boat, motor and trailer, boat insurance, equipment, fuel, mainentance, props, etc. When asked, I generally reply that my cost per pound of fish fillets is around $800. Of course, I am also a very bad fisherman. But hey. It's worth it. Therapy cost much more!

Saugeye limit caught in June by Gary Lett
This is my typical catch for the last 10 days. Majority of the fish we caught was around west side of cranetown-towards the moose, state campground and blackhawk area. I have a triangle pattern working all those areas.

June is the best time of yr for me on trolling for saugeye, and the end of the month yields the 5-6 pounders. Gary Lett

    Saugeye Limit Discussion

New State Record Saugeye Confirmed OUTDOOR WRITERS of OHIO, Inc. RECORD FISH COMMITTEE Outdoor Writers of Ohio All-Tackle Record Fish Committee; Tom Cross Chairman A new Ohio state record fish has been certified by the Outdoor Writers of Ohio All-Tackle Record Fish Committee, December 7, 2001. Fred Sulek of St. Clairsville, OH, has caught a new Ohio state record saugeye weighing 12.83 pounds from Clendening Reservoir in Harrison County on the night of November 19 at 7:00 p.m. Mr. Sulek was wading and fishing along the shoreline of Clendening Reservoir that late evening casting a Rat-L-Trap into the shallow waters when he hooked and landed the record fish. Mr. Sulek was using a spinning rod loaded with 4 lb. test line and has caught several large saugeyes from Clendening Lake, some weighing as much as 10 pounds. Sulek's record saugeye was 30 inches long, with a 19-˝ inch girth. A saugeye is a hybrid cross between a sauger and a walleye. Division of Wildlife fisheries biologist Ed Raffle of the Highlandtown Fish Unit identified Mr. Sulek's record saugeye. Fred Sulek's catch replaces the old saugeye record of 12.42 pounds held by Daniel D'Amore of Swanton, Ohio, that was caught at Lake Logan, on March 29, 1993. Thank you Ray Wise for sharing this report.

Notice from Fish Management and Research
I've heard requests from a number of anglers over the past few years for a length limit on saugeyes. Let me run through a bit of our rationale for why things are managed the way they are, and what we've done recently to try to help the situation. We use length limits for the management of a number of fish species in Ohio. Those length limits usually have something to do with trying to allow fish to reach adult spawning size before they are subject to harvest. In other words, we have strong biological reasons for using this type of regulation. In the case of a non-reproducing fish like saugeye however, there is no biological reason for a length limit. In this case, a length limit would simply be a judgment call as to what a "quality" fish is. When anglers ask for a length limit, and there is no basis in biology for one, what they are asking in essence is for their idea of what a "keeper" is, to be imposed on everyone. When you look at cross-section of anglers in Ohio, you find a variety of levels of skill and experience. For very experienced anglers, a half dozen 12-inch saugeyes is a bad day. For entry-level (new) anglers, it may be the difference between being "hooked on fishing" and going golfing the next weekend. Participation in fishing and hunting is declining nationwide. Now is not a good time to impose experienced angler's values on anglers with limited experience. On the bright side for folks like yourself, is a new regulation that will take effect on March 1, 2001. This regulation will reduce the bag limit on inland walleyes, saugeyes, and sauger from 10 fish to 6 fish. This should help to prevent over-harvest on our inland lakes, while at the same time allowing anglers to judge for themselves, what a "keeper" fish is. This is in keeping with our philosophy of making management decisions based on biology, and staying away from making value judgments for anglers. Thanks for your interest in our saugeye program. We will continue to try to make it the best it can be through judicious use of regulations and stocking. Please share the above information with other Indian Lake saugeye anglers if you get the chance. Good fishing, Ray Petering Assistant Administrator Fish Management & Research

    April 27, 2008 - Bass
Did really well this past week on bass, throwin a spinnerbait around docks and pads, basically anything that was vertical structure. Didn't do so hot on the saugeyes. Saw guys jigging and trolling. I suspect the eyes are in between the two methods. Once the weather stabilizes in the next two weeks, I look forward to trolling again.

    April 24 - Crappies
Last night I went to mound wood just before dark every thing was still, all of a sudden on the wall side, on the wall every body started to get crappie, it was a crappie here, a crappie there, a crappie every where, it was exciting to see & in other area's around mound wood, like the docks in the back, everyone I talk to said that bite was dead compared to the past days,so I have seen a crappie bite.

March 20, 2008 - Saugeye from the bank
SEVERAL METHODS WORK,CASTING FROM SHORE BY THE BOAT RAMP EAST UP THE SHORELINE ABOUT 500YARDS YOU CAN CAST LEAD HEADS TIPPED WITH A MINNOW OR PLAIN,RAT L TRAPS,SHAD RAPS, VIBES.WATER IS 3-5FT AS FAR AS YOU CAN CAST.ONE OTHER METHOD IS TIGHTLINING A FLOATING JIG TIPPED WITH A MINNOW.A 1/4 TO 3/8 OZ SPLIT SHOT ABOUT 2-3 FT ABOVE YOUR FLOATER.WATCH YOUR ROD TIP SOMETIMES IT CAN BE FAST AND FURIOUS,ALSO BRING A DIP NET.APRIL AND MAY ARE PRIME TIME ON SOUTHSHORE.GOOD LUCK

    March 17, 2008 - Saugeye
ice is definately gone, lake is open and muddy.the mud should not effect the saugeye.if water temps are between 38-44,the saugeye should be relatively close to shore along lake view rocks;especially early morning and evening.also northfork area may produce and if wind is blowing water into the donut shop, there may be some saugeye present.jigs tipped with minnows is my recommended method for these early spring saugeyes.if your a troller you may be just too early.

    February 3, 2008 - Bluegill
went to long island today with a couple guys coming all the way from lancaster ohio and the day could hardly be scripted better.this was the first ever hard water trip for one of my fellow anglers.we immediately found a good area away from any crowds on the edge of some pads in about 5' of water.we had non stop action and caught alot of gills with 7 crappie,1 saugeye, and 2 bass.many of the gills were 8"-9" six of the crappie the same and one 13.5" crappie as well as a 14" saugeye.estimate near 100 fish with 47 kept.my companions were very happy travelling back to lancaster.

Bass - Feb. 18 Early spring(march-beginning of april)target rocky shoreline with cranks, slow rolling spinnerbaits, and jigs(mid april-may)start targeting emerging pads with shallow cranks and a stop and go retrieves.indian is shallow and offers tons of bass habitat,so it is difficult to isolate the most productive areas.keep searching;i've found that once i catch one that general area usually produces at least one more.good luck.

Perch - Oct. 3 - My brother is up there for the week. He caught a nice 13" perch right in front of moundwood. I don't know what he was using, but I would think he was jigging minnows or maybe a vibee.

    July 6, 2007 - Saugeye

My Dad got the Longest of the year. Hit like a snag then started coming in like a hawg saugeye. Turned out to be a Red/white/and Blue 45" Old Glory Wind Sock, LMAO! Still in like new shape,so wasn't on the bottom very long. Later on in the same area,he got his Fish Ohio 21.5",so his personal best!! We got a total of 7 saugeye,6 of them in the 15"-16" range and a dozen dinks. Also threw back a nasty looking brown bullhead. 1st bullhead I've ever caught trolling. The bite is getting better, but water temp climbed up to 80 degrees.
