EEL MYSTERIOUSLY APPEARS, DISAPPEARS

An American eel caught in Indian Lake by a fisherman this summer has been a double mystery for state wildlife officials.

The first mystery is how it got into Indian Lake in Logan County; the second is its current whereabouts.

The eel has disappeared from the Ohio State Fair, where it was put on display in an 800-gallon aquarium.

Steve Graham, fish-management supervisor for central Ohio, said the eel, a 15-inch-long juvenile female, usually lives in salt water. They can grow up to 40 inches long.

The males remain in saltwater all their lives, but the females come up rivers to lay their eggs. They show up in Ohio once in a great while.

They swim up the Mississippi to the Ohio River and then up the Ohio. From there, they sometimes enter the Miami, Muskingum or Scioto rivers.

This eel, however, was found in Indian Lake, which has no connection to the Ohio or the Mississippi. The Miami River flows out of Indian Lake, but a low-head dam would have prevented the eel from swimming into the lake.

It may have been caught previously by a fisherman who released it into the lake. It was caught by an angler fishing at night using a leech as bait. He turned it over to the Division of Wildlife, Graham said.

Wildlife officials took the eel out to the state fair and put it on display with the other critters in the Natural Resources section. But 20 minutes after it was put in an aquarium, it disappeared.

"It may have wiggled or crawled out of the aquarium, but if it did that, it would be dead by now and we would have smelled it," Graham said. "We believe it is in the 5 inches of water under the floor of the aquarium. We think it's still alive.

"We will check for it there after the fair."
