  • Life Expectancy of Various Parts of your Home

A new study sponsored by Bank of America Home Equity and conducted by the National Association of Home Builders in the summer of 2006 show the following:
Components expected to last for the life of the house:
    Toilets
    Wood floors
    Insulation - all types
fiberglass, steel and wood exterior doors
Some components have a much shorter life expectancy
Wood decks should last about 20 years, depending on the climate
kitchen faucets should last about 15 years
Linoleum floors have a life expectancy of about 25 years
Furnaces can be expected to last 15 to 20 years
    Air conditioners 10-15 years.
kitchen cabinets is about 50 years
interior paint has a practical life expectancy of about 15 years
    Roofing
The life of a roof depends on local weather conditions, proper building and design,
material quality, and adequate maintenance. Slate, copper, and clay/concrete roofs have the
longest life expectancy - over 50 years. Roofs made of asphalt shingles last for about 20 years
while roofs made of fiber cement shingles have a life expectancy of about 25 years, and roofs
made of wood shakes can be expected to last for about 30 years.

Life expectancies for materials included in this study are averages. Home owners often replace items long before the end of their expected life span due to personal preferences and changing trends.

Permeable pavers and pavement. These new products, manufactured from a range of materials, provide a twofold benefit. Because water passes through them, permeable products can reduce the need for stormwater treatment. And that water, naturally filtered by the soil through which it passes, flows back into underground aquifers, helping to replenish water supplies.
